On My Mind: Marni at H&M

Last night I attended the preview for Marni for H&M, set to launch, March 8th. This collection will likely set records in my opinion, it looks fantastic, there wasn’t a piece I didn’t want for my own. Even the video directed by Sofia Coppola, adds to it’s most covetable appeal. There are full men’s and women’s collections, including jewellery and accessories. And let me just say that the jewellery is as want-worthy as its full fashion counterpart, and I have to say Marni jewellery is what made me take note many years ago. However, the amazing pattern play that Consuelo Castiglioni has made notoriously famous, is in full effect here. Beautiful bold pattern, playing effortlessly alongside golden brocades, a hippie sensuality with an urban approach, would best describe this collection. And as I say, a total and utter yearning for Marni at H&M.

On My Mind: To the Sunny Side of the Street

A good friend once told me that the best way to prevent against facial wrinkles, i.e crows feet, was wear to sunglasses. All day, everyday. Even in the winter, the sun is still always around, and the reflection off of the snow is fierce! All that squinting sends you on the fast track to deep lines around your eyes. Her mother wore sunglasses everyday, and her skin is perfection!

Not that we need any more reason to accessorize, but we thought that this was the perfect excuse to don a new pair of sunnies in the depths of February!

We fell in love with the creative designs of the Warby Parker line and even more in love with their mission statement: to create high-quality and affordable eyewear with unique frames. On the artsy side, it’s vintage and modern, but also fully functional, custom fit with anti-reflective, polycarbonate prescription lenses. They even break down why designer frames are so high-priced compared to theirs, and we’ve often wondered ourselves how can a regular-looking plastic frame retail for $500+!

You can’t help but fall in love at first sight with the Evelyn in Whisky Tortoise, which is a perfect, year-round shade. Who doesn’t look good in a cat eye frame?

For a more glamourous day, the Liv is perfection.

And since we already LOVE the brand SUNO and use pieces from the brand all the time on set, we really want to get our hands on these limited edition WARBY PARKER X SUNO frames. The thought of seeing the pretty, eclectic SUNO prints every time we put our sunglasses on, makes us think it’s going to be a whole lot easier putting a outfit together.

Their “Buy a pair, Give a pair” program gives us warm tingly feelings inside. Knowing that every time we purchase a pair a glasses, someone in need, gets a pair too. Happy endings, and zero crows feet in ‘sight’! I’ll take 2 please!

On My Mind: Bisous for your feet, and then some!

New designer Jordana Silver, is not your average girl with just an average shoe fetish, oh no! We are sure that we can all relate to a gal’s inexplicable desire for an inordinate numbers of shoes; the unique thing however, is how Jordana decided to take her shoe fetish, as well as her extensive fashion design training, to create her new line of shoe accessories called, Bisous (bisous means kiss in French). Bisous was created and “designed to add variety and personality to women’s soles while still enabling them to indulge and stay current,” Jordana’s words in an article she was interviewed for at Lilogi (PS, Lilogi is one of our new favorite friends). Jordana feels and we definitely agree, that, “we accessorize everything else we wear, so why not accessorize shoes, too”? Love!

What we love the most, is how these cute, sassy and fun these accessories are, and they are not only limited to your shoes. You can make them work in so many ways….add them to your clutch, wear one as a brooch, how about on your necklace as a pendant?

The Bisous collection changes each season to reflect current fashion trends, you will always be relevant, and who knows how or where this will expand?!

On My Mind: Lacoste S/S 2012

Gone are the days when the name Lacoste makes us think, tennis. When we hear “Lacoste” today, we hear sporty, chic, sexy, fresh and colorful. Succeeding Christophe Lemaire, who took over for Jean-Paul Gaultier at Hermes; Lacoste has gone in a sexier and more modern direction, under the tutelage of designer and couturier, Felipe Oliveira Baptista. The classic polo shirt meets architectural lines and interesting new cuts. Lacoste is answering the question of what to wear while running some errands, yet never compromising on style. We are loving the mix of athletic colors, perfectly in cue with this spring’s sporty sensibility. The juxtaposition of a cute jumper for the day, that can easily move into evening, with thick piping and chunky lining on the pockets was a fun recurring theme in the collection. We’re looking forward to unique fabrics and linear patterns that are not usually featured in Lacoste’s look, but we love how Baptista has honoured Lacoste’s age old vision as a fashionable sports wear line.

The accessories were fantastic. We could own this “Cathy” tote in every color it is available in, and then some. The design of this bucket tote is perfect. We just want to get our hands on this buttery leather beauty with seemingly endless amount of space for keys, lip gloss, cell phone, possibly even a tennis racket?

And don’t even get us started on the shoes. The shoes included an array of color-blocking, and mix of materials like patent leather and suede; two things we adore.

On My Table: Simple Black Cod, Gnocchi & Caesar Salad

One of my favorite fishes, is black cod. If prepared well, it is a little bit of heaven. Like with most fish, I feel that less is more. Some salt and pepper is usually enough, let the fish speak for itself. Here is my favorite way to cook fresh black cod.

Ingredients

-fresh black cod

-salt & pepper to taste

-1 tablespoon olive oil & 1 tablespoon grape seed oil

-green onions for garnish

I have this fantastic frying pan with a glass lid, that I use for cooking fish. What I like about this particular pan, is that I can sear the skin of the fish till it is nice and crispy, but keep the lid on to steam the meat of the fish.

First, season the fish with salt and pepper. Then heat oils in pan. (Olive oil is good for taste, but grape seed oil burns at a higher temperature, so it is better for frying.) Once oil is hot, place fish skin side down in pan and cover with lid. Remove from heat once cooked through, about 10 minutes.

This particular day, I paired the fish with butter & sage gnocchi and a caesar salad, you can get the recipe for the salad here.

As for the gnocchi, this one is pretty simple too….

Ingredients

-package of gnocchi

-2 tablespoons of butter

-2 tablespoons of sage, chopped into strips

-save a tablespoon of pasta water

-salt & pepper to taste

Cook gnocchi according to package instructions. When the gnocchi is almost cooked, heat butter in pan, until browned. Then add sage to pan, and cook till strips get a little crispy. Add drained gnocchi to pan plus a tablepoon of pasta water. Lightly saute gnocchi till combined with butter and sage. Salt and pepper to taste. And that’s it, just serve and eat.

On My Mind: Lifetime Collective- Women’s S/S 2012

As soon as it starts getting really cold and nippy, and the holiday decorations are gone, we start looking forward to spring; and no one knows how to handle that winter-to-spring transition better than Canadian designers. Lifetime Collective, a Vancouver-based design team, has been releasing earthy, easy-to-wear pieces for men since 2002. Now they are collaborating with Jude Feller, known for her Canadian fashion label lily+jae, on making a women’s collection for the brand.

The women’s s/s 2012 collection is a laid-back, flirty mix of light daytime patterns and heavy layers, perfect for unpredictable weather on unprecedented days. We often say here up here in our “igloo’s”, the best way to handle transitional weather is with layers, lots of layers…that way you are prepared for anything and everything. A chunky printed poncho, a light white polo, khakis, and colourful rain jackets; all the things I can always use more of in my wardrobe, and classic enough to own forever.

Its hard to choose a single, favourite piece when there are so many different moods and adventures in life, and we want to dress appropriately for each. Maxi skirts and harem pants are a stylist’s sweat pants, and I can’t wait to wear these beautiful, yet comfy pieces on set. I could see myself wearing the plaid jumper or floral blouse to a picnic or to sit on a busy patio on a hot summer day. The colour palette is so vast, with the blues, rusts, and pinks, but neutral and effortless enough to go with pieces I already have in my wardrobe.

This video to preview the Lifetime Collective S/S 2012 collection makes me want to just pick up, grab some friends, and hit the road.
